    What’s the best type of firewood? It comes down to two factors density and moisture content. Hardwoods like oak and hickory release more heat when they burn compared to a softwood. Softwoods burn really hot but don’t last very long. Hardwood with the correct moisture content will burn both hot and slow saving you on your heating costs. You may see someone advertise hardwood extremely cheap. This is usually what is called green wood. It is basically wood cut and split from a tree that was recently cut down. The moisture content in green wood is extremely high. This will cause excessive smoke when burned as well as what called creosote. Creosote can build up in your chimney and if not cleaned can create a stack fire. This is why developing a relationship with your firewood supplier and knowing what your buying is important.
